Things to See and Surroundings
The town of Mazarrón, some 3 km. distant from the coast, still shows traces of an antique urban settlement whose development was clearly influenced by the prosperity of its mining industry. The remains of drop hammers are still here, on the slopes of the hills of Los Perules or San Cristóbal.
The streets of Mazarrón display some interesting monuments; among them, the Town Hall, in a modernist style, a clear signal of the early years of splendor at the beginning of this century. The Town Hall boasts a fine assembly room and next to this building, the distinctive Antiguo Ateneo Cultural (Old Cultural Centre), built around the same time. You will find the church of San Andrés (16th century) behind the Town Hall of Mazarrón, with a beautiful Mudéjar panelling. Very close is the convent of la Purísima, the patron saint of the town. And you won´t miss the ruins of the castle of los Vélez in Mazarrón.
Outside the town, in Puerto de Mazarrón, the Torre Vieja de la Cumbre (the Old Tower at the Summit), that was erected in the 17th century and near Bolnuevo, the Torre de los Caballos (Tower of the Horses). Along the road to Bolnuevo lies the cabezo del Molinete (Windmill mound), a circular watchtower, whose lower section still stands and in Bolnuevo, the Torre de Santa Isabel (St. Elizabeth´s Tower), yet again between Bolnuevo and Mazarrón, the cabezo del Plomo (Lead mound), with the remains of a fortified Neolithic settlement upon it.
The harbor of Puerto de Mazarrón is well worth a visit, brimming with coastal fishing vessels, have a visit at la Lonja, (the fish market), with its traditional auction. Opposite the sand bars at the beach of Bolnuevo is one of the most peculiar of all landscapes in the Region. Here, wind and water together have shaped strange forms, modelling them to form a sort of ´haunted city´.
